Name: Ryuu Kitayama
Codename: Fiddler
Aliases:Age: 33
Occupation: Lawyer at Yancey, Courtland, Thomas & Scott.
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Faction: Brotherhood
Physical Description: Ryuu’s drivers license lists him at 5’9”, though in all honesty he’s actually 5’8”. A good two inches taller than anyone else in his family, most of Ryuu’s height is in his legs. Growing up, Ryuu was never the most athletic, though he was never picked last for kickball teams. He finally found his sport in his sophomore year of high school, cross country running. After that year, he always tried to keep in good shape throughout the rest his life, which now shows as he’s in his thirties. His lean body is lightly muscled, hiding his underlying strength. His athletically, toned body is normally hidden under business suits he normally wears for work.
When it comes to the rest of his body, his whole physique presents the mannerism of one that is easy to trust and believe. Ryuu has a charming smile, one that you can’t help but trust, one that comes in handy for his profession as a lawyer. Thanks to orthodontia, his smile is almost perfect, except for a small gap between his front teeth, from a time that he refused to wear a retainer. His dark black hair is kept at about three inches, just long enough to allow some movement, but not enough to get in the way of his vision. The eyes are the most important part when it comes to making a case. At least that’s the case for Ryuu. His deep brown eyes are ones that you could get lost in. Though that might just be a byproduct of his power.

Personality: Ryuu can be a really stand up guy. He has a strong sense of family loyalty. Willing to do anything to protect his sister, even going to such lengths as to join a terrorist organization for her. He takes all of his cases very seriously, a firm believer in “innocent until proven guilty”. He is often found working late at the offices when he has an upcoming court date. That being said one of the things that he is most passionate about is the McAllister Act. He doesn’t view it as ethical the punish mutants for being born differently. When he finally has time off from a case, which is very rare, Ryuu does enjoy frequenting a few different clubs in the Manhattan area.
On the other hand though, being an up and coming lawyer certainly hasn’t made Ryuu any more humble. Though he doesn’t like to admit it, the recognition really has gone to his head. His skills of persuasion are top notch, and he doesn’t care if he uses them for some personal gain. Including getting girls to go home with him at the clubs. His stubbornness and unwillingness to give in have also landed him in a number of bar fights. It doesn’t help that almost all of his negative traits also help him to be a successful lawyer, which gives him all the more reason to develop these habits.
His personality clashed somewhat with the other members of the brotherhood. He’s wasn’t used to taking orders and he really didn’t like not being able to be in charge. However, he was able to set it all aside because he was focused on one single goal, getting his sister out of New Smyrna.
History: Ryuu was the first son born to recent immigrants from Japan. His parents Akiko and Hitomi, immigrate from Osaka, Japan. They landed first in Los Angeles, California before moving to a town in eastern Pennsylvania called Lancaster. For another two years, Akiko and Hitomi would live by themselves until one June day when Akiko was pregnant. Nine months later on February 23, 1976 Ryuu Kitayama was born in Lancaster General Hospital, seven pounds eight ounces at 5:23 pm. His parents took him home from the hospital a week later. After overcoming the obstacle of learning to walk at thirteen months, it was impossible to keep Ryuu from moving. He wanted to go anywhere and everywhere. He was a curious child, always wanting to learn what something did and how it worked. But one of his most curious attributes was he loved to watch people. It was something he always did, from the time he could sit up in his crib.
When Ryuu turned seven he learned he was going to be a big brother. At first, he rejected the idea, telling his mother to take the baby back. Once his sister, Yukiko, was born Ryuu’s ideas quickly changed. He was more protective of that little girl than of anything else in his life. Yuki was his baby sister, and no one would ever hurt her while he was around.
Growing up, Ryuu attended Hamilton Elementary School from kindergarten until sixth grade. During that time, he excelled at subjects such as English and history. However, he found himself constantly struggling with math and science courses. He was a popular boy, always surrounding himself with friends at recess. Things continued the same way as he made his way through middle school, and even as he made it into high school at Lancaster High School. His power manifested itself when he was a freshman in high school, during the long walk home from school. It was February and there was ice all over the roads. As he was crossing one of the roads near his house, he slipped on a patch of ice and before he could get back up a semi-truck came barreling from the other direction. As he prepared himself for his death, the strangest thing happened, he passed through the truck. Or more specifically, the truck passed through him. Before the truck driver could stop and see if he was ok, he fled, not understanding what it was that happened to him. After that he tried more and more things with his powers, and found himself to pass not only through an object laterally but also vertically.
After graduation, Ryuu went on to attend Elizabethtown College majoring in Political Science and Pre-law. This eventually led to him attending Law School at Columbia in New York City. Law came easily to him, graduating top of his class. After graduation, he was employed at the firm Yancey, Courtland, Thomas & Scott. He passed quickly through the ranks, just in time to see the passage of the McAllister Act. It was then that he realized that his whole life was about to change. His sister was also a mutant, much more powerful than him and harder to hide her ability as well.
It didn’t take long for one of Yuki’s partying habits to land her in a hospital, where they ran a blood test confirming her as a mutant. That day was the last that he ever saw his sister. She was jailed without trial and held at New Smyrna. Though Ryuu had always been fighting for mutant rights, this event changed him. He searched out the Brotherhood. A group that had been constantly decried as terrorists, the one group he believed could help free his sister.
Power: Ryuu’s ability was quite a shock to him when one day he found himself passing through a solid object. At first, he had been sure that it was some sort of miracle that allowed him to do that. Not a change in his DNA. It wasn’t until after he did some more tests to see whether it had just been a fluke. He found himself being able to pass through the walls of buildings. When he first manifested his power, he was only able to take himself and small objects attached to him into a “phased” mode. However, through practice and the natural increase in his power, he is now able to take about three times his body mass through with him, as long as he in physically touching the objects. Another problem with his phasing, is that he can only pass through an object and stay in there as long as he can hold his breath. As a result he’s been doing breathing exercises from shortly after he first learned one of his limitations.
When it comes to the objects he can phase through, the easiest for him are organic materials, wood and living bodies. However certain metals are harder for him to phase though, adamantium being the first that comes to mind. The amount of time and effort required to pass though adamantium increases greatly. Other hard metals require extra effort to pass though, and can cause a degree of pain. While in a phased state, Ryuu may not be vulnerable to attacks the physically interact with his body but he is still vulnerable to telepathic attacks and other attacks targeting the mind.

RP Sample: The morning started all too early for Ryuu. He’s been stuck at the office until almost 2am trying to put together the final details to Gordon’s trial. And now, here his alarm was going off at 6am. Why couldn’t the judge have scheduled the trial for the afternoon, he thought as he rolled out of bed. At least that way he could have gotten some sleep. After taking a long, hot shower Ryuu made his way out to the kitchen, turning on the coffee pot. One of these days he needed to remember to turn it on before he took his shower, either that or break down a buy one that had a timer. Rubbing at his eyes, he made his way back into the bedroom to put on the black Armani suit he had pick out the previous night.
Once he had his morning coffee and bagel, it was already 7:30. Grabbing his coat, his made his way from his apartment to the front of the building where he had the doorman call him a cab. “100 Centre Court. Criminal Building please.” He said to the taxi driver as he got in. With traffic it normally took at least thirty minutes to make it from his apartment on the Upper East Side. Today it took about forty. After paying the driver, he stepped out onto the street in front of the Manhattan Criminal Court Building. From his vantage point he could see the New York Supreme Court. He’d have a trial there soon. They had just taken on a client accused of 1st Degree Murder of his wife. Ryuu hadn’t had time to take a good look at the case yet, but he was sure it wasn’t going to be an easy one to win. Something told him there was a mistress involved.
Taking a deep breath, Ryuu made his way up the stairs into the courthouse. It was 8:25, just enough time to get in there, meet with his client, go over the notes, and not be late to trial. Judge Hathaway was presiding today. Ryuu had been hearing stories about her for years when he was in law school. She was the type that wouldn’t put up with any crap. When he was first starting out at the firm he had sat in on a trial under Hathaway, after that he promised he would never get on her bad side. As he walked through the door, he was stopped by a clerk and told that the Judge wanted to see him in her chambers. Ryuu nodded graciously, before heading upstairs to the offices. Something told him this couldn’t be good.
