Name: Isaac Mackenzie Gadsby
Codename: Nuance
Aliases: None
Age: 23 (Born August 29th)
Occupation: Student Teacher / Aspiring Novelist
Sexuality: Heterosexual (?)
Faction: Unaffiliated
Physical Description: Isaac has a tall, slender build that makes him appear more like a thin branch swaying in the wind than an actual human being. He is very willowy, and could even be considered graceful in the way he moves. That is, when not laden with book bags and note binders. There’s nothing terribly bold about his appearance. He has dusty brown blonde hair, kept at medium length. It’s wavy in texture, varied in color, and longer on the right side of his face on his left. His eyes are a light blue, and generally quick to move about in a nervous fashion. His facial structure is somewhat distinctive. He has a thin face with a squared off chin and a fairly defined jaw line.
In terms of clothing, Isaac wears a lot of thin button up sweaters and sweater vests, sometimes with or without a tie. He comes of as fairly studious, and a loner. You will rarely see him in close proximity to other people- he likes his personal space, but is definitely willing to pick up and relocate his ‘personal space’ to get out of someone else’s way. But his bias towards quiet and solitude can easily make him seem unapproachable. With Isaac what you see is what you get: A quiet nerd with a predisposition towards antisocial behaviors.

Personality: Isaac is an easy person to overlook. He’s quiet, contained, unassertive, and unassuming. With timidity and nervousness present in every aspect of his demeanor, he rarely gives off the pretense of being confident or intimidating. Instead his gives off an impression of uncertainty, and for this reason finds it difficult to get anyone to take him seriously. He is very much a background type of guy, and has always been more comfortable operating behind the scenes while others enjoy the spotlight. And Isaac is all about keeping himself comfortable and safe; he doesn’t take risks, and he avoids situations that make him uncomfortable like the plague.
Isaac is a follower; his opinions can easily be sway by a more dominant personality. It is easy to change his mind, because he’d sooner reassess his opinions and ideas to avoid confrontation. He listens and believes almost anything anybody tells him, trusting that they wouldn’t lie to him. Who would lie to such an indecisive person? It would be cruel, wouldn’t it? He is very much an ISFP personality type, and keeps pretty much everything to himself. He’s a difficult person to get to know a lot about, because he’s a better listener than a talker. He might latch onto people for protection, but that doesn’t mean he opens up every detail about himself to them. He prefers to hear about them, and support them- a sort of paying back for the amount of security he receives from being around them.
On the other hand, once a person has been around Isaac long enough too begin to understand his personality and the inner workings of his mind, they will see a much calmer and kinder side of him. Even if he is excessively needy in his relationships with other people, he makes up for it in faithfulness and sympathy. As long as he feels secure in your friendship, he’s unlikely to betray you. He is a compassionate person, and has a great amount of concern for the wellbeing of his friends.
Isaac tends to neglect giving himself credit for his accomplishments; he is his own worst critic. And yet he is fairly good at his job. He may only be a student teacher, but the majority of teenagers he has interacted with seemed to like him and listen well. Of coarse there have been several exceptions to this, but overall he’s been successful in the classroom. Even though this has pleasantly surprised him, he focuses more on his shortcomings and criticizes himself for his lack of organization, his tendency to go off topic, or his inability to discipline unruly students. He also doesn’t general acknowledge his aptitude for creative writing. He hasn’t told many people that he even writes at all, let alone the fact that he has been close to being published twice, and an agent requested a copy of his latest manuscript to read. He is currently anxiously awaiting a response, hoping that she will agree to represent this newest effort of his.
History:Born and raised on a rural property outside of New York City. His mother was a AKC official, and his father was a scholar and librarian. Isaac’s mother was also a breeder of Gordon Setters. So it was no surprise that Isaac grew up to be an animal lover. Isaac spent many hours helping their mother care for the dogs, and they were often a form of entertainment in their out of the way rural setting. His childhood was pretty regular, all in all. He had a good mother, a loving, if somewhat bookish and quiet, father. Isaac was a well-liked, amiable child, if somewhat timid. He was also fairly bright, and not disruptive to the classroom, so his teachers liked him as well.
Isaac’s life through high school was awkward, emotional, and tumultuous. He had more than his fair share of trouble. He was a bit of a social outcast, and because of this spent the first two years of high school with a maximum of one friend and with everyone else teasing the hell out of him, or snubbing him so they wouldn’t be socially ostracized as well. But however this balanced out as he got a little older; people matured a little more and became more accepting, and also it helped that Isaac wasn’t exactly an ugly guy. He was tall, and quiet, and well… some girls liked that. Isaac had one girlfriend in grade twelve. She was very smart, like him, and seemed to do well at everything she tried. Isaac was quite infatuated with her, but they broke up after graduation, as she was going to go to an Ivy League school, and it was in Isaac’s heart to do not much more than become a teacher. His lack of aspirations frustrated her, and it also meant that they would be far apart for long periods of time, and that just wouldn’t work for them.
Isaac went to school, aiming to become an English teacher, and studying both English and education majors at once. Later on, in order to get his degree, he was required to do student teaching. Starting this year, Isaac began student teaching at a public school at home in New York. Things went well for the first couple weeks. It took him awhile to figure out how to act among all the teenagers- he was uncertain. It felt like ages since he’d been in high school and yet now he had to get used to being there as an authority figure, not as a timid student.
Despite his new-experience jitters, the few students he interacted with seemed to warm up to him quickly. He suspected this had something to do with the fact that he wasn’t overly involved, and was more so just there to observe and learn from the classroom he was assigned to, rarely doing anything more important than menial tasks for the teacher. He had been so anxious to get on the good side of the students, and though he had doubted that it would happen, it did. At first he enjoyed it- it was a strange, but good feeling to have teenagers looking up to him, even thinking he was kind of cool, in that geeky strange way. But things got uncomfortable fairly quickly, especially with one female student.
Now, Isaac had noticed this girl- it was really, really hard not to with her showing up to class in short shorts and low cut tops. But he’d been the responsible adult and had done his best to ignore it. That would be the hardest part about teaching he had thought, all the attractive young girls and having to ignore the fact that they liked to show off their newly obtained female parts. But he had managed it and managed it well, in his opinion. That was, until he started noticing her noticing
him. She would bat her eyelashes at him in class, or stick around after the bell if he was cleaning up in the classroom. In these situations, Isaac would quickly drop what he was doing and leave. But things got worse when he lost his cell phone, and when it turned up again, suddenly he started getting text after text from this girl.
Isaac never replied to them- instead, in his panic, he reported it to his supervisor and requested a reassignment in another school. Isaac had been sufficiently creeped out, and wanted to be no where near her ever again. He didn’t want to get pinned with inappropriate conduct that could potentially ruin his career, because the whole thing had definitely NOT been his fault. What he didn’t realize was that it had been his ability at work.
Besides that, nothing terribly eventful has happened in Isaac’s life. He is currently living alone with his two cats in a cheap studio apartment, student teaching at another public school in New York.
Power: Pheromone Manipulation – Isaac isn’t aware that he even has this ability, and therefore has no conscious control over when and how he uses it. It operates purely on a subconscious level at the moment, but it tends to correspond with his current mental processes, if it takes effect at all. For example, if he feels his space is being invaded, he might subconsciously release pheromones to ‘mark his territory’ and discourage others from entering that space. Or if he is lusting after a girl, his ability might activate in order to make him more attractive to her.
Isaac can also produce a variety of other types of pheromones that elicit changes in behavior. When in a state of stress- perhaps feeling attacked or afraid, he gives off alarm pheromones that either encourage flight or aggression in either himself or people around him. This can cause problems for him, as naturally it would heighten the tenseness of the situation. But a variety of other types of pheromones can induce calming effects, a compulsion to gather together as a group, sexual attraction, etc. Isaac also has the potential to manipulate the pheromones that others naturally release, and leave trails of pheromones that might attract others to follow it.
The type of pheromone and the chemical involved effect how far the pheromones travel and how long they last. The farthest any pheromone of his has ever traveled is a mile, but the majority of them can only move much shorter distances before breaking down.
Isaac is also extra sensitive to pheromones, and can become easily confused or disoriented if too much of a foreign pheromone is present. If he secretes too much of a single pheromone, or too many different types in a short period of time, is causes him mental and physical drain. He will become tired and have to rest before using his ability again. And because Isaac isn’t aware of his ability, he isn’t able to exercise any control over it. It is erratic and inconsistent, which is one of the reasons why Isaac doesn’t suspect himself of being a mutant. He views any noticeable that has been caused by his power as a strange coincidence.
